The kingdom enlarged its territory by the half of 4th century after conquering neighbor city Meroë in 330, and entered “Golden Age” for the next three centuries. On July 18 a name was made for 500,000 men for one, two, and three years, and on Dec. 19 another for 300,000 for the same intervals; and these calls had been followed by drafts. A conspicuous incident of the struggle in Missouri was the defence of Lexington, on the Missouri river, against a greatly superior power, by 2,780 males below Col. Missouri facet, enabling the fleet to get below it, Gen. Pope on April 7 crossed a portion of his troops to the E. facet. Gen. Fremont, having been appointed to the command of the western department, took the sphere in Missouri close to the tip of September, and by degrees drove the confederates beneath Gen. Price again to the S. W. corner of the state; however on Nov. 2 he was superseded by Gen. Hunter. The federal military once more fell back to Rolla, the confederates advancing as it receded. On Aug. 5 the confederate Gen. Breckinridge was repulsed in an attack on Baton Rouge by Gen. Williams, who fell in the mean time of victory.
On Aug. 29 Forts Hatteras and Clark, at Hatteras inlet, the primary entrance to Pamlico sound on the coast of North Carolina, have been taken by a navy and naval expedition underneath Gen. Butler and Com. On Aug. 29 and 30 occurred the second battle of Bull Run, between the Union military underneath Pope and the confederate forces beneath Jackson and Longstreet, in which the latter had the benefit. The primary epidemic occurred in Ethiopia was in 849, causing the Aksumite Emperor Abba Yohannes evicted from place because of “God’s punishment for misdeeds”. Gen. Rosecrans. The confederates beneath Gen. Price having occupied Iuka, Miss., Gen. Rosecrans attacked that place on Sept. They soon obtained control of that part of the state, and at the close of the 12 months scarcely any armed confederates were discovered W. of the Alleghanies in Virginia. A confederate pressure had entered New Mexico from Texas early in 1862, however they were driven out earlier than the close of the spring, and subsequently that territory was unmolested. On Nov. 28, 1862, Gen. Grant, in command in W. Tennessee, commenced an advance into Mississippi with the design of operating against Vicksburg.
Gen. Grant, commander of the federal forces at Cairo, Ill., consequently took possession (Sept. On Feb. 6 the federal commodore Foote, with a fleet of gunboats from Cairo, decreased Fort Henry on the E. financial institution of the Tennessee river in Tennessee; and on the 16th Fort Donelson, on the W. financial institution of the Cumberland, surrendered with about 13,000 men after some severe preventing to Gen. Grant. Du Pont, with transports conveying 10,000 men beneath Gen. T. W. Sherman, sailed from Hampton roads, and on the night of Nov. Three arrived off Port Royal, S. C. On the 7th they attacked Forts Beauregard and Walker on the entrance of the harbor, and after a bombardment of practically 5 hours put the garrisons to flight, thus securing the finest harbor on the southern coast. 25 and 29. On Oct. 1 he began to move against Bragg, who slowly retreated to Perryville, where he made a stand, and on the 8th a battle ensued, through which the confederates misplaced 2,500 men and the federals greater than 4,000. During the succeeding night Bragg continued his retreat, and joining Kirby Smith handed into E. Tennessee.
Gen. Ord routed the confederates with heavy loss at Dranesville, on the highway from Washington to Leesburg. In July Gen. Pope was positioned in command of the federal army of Virginia, consisting of the forces that had been working within the valley and of those under Gen. McDowell protecting Washington. On July 21 was fought the battle of Bull Run, close to Manassas Junction, Va., the first of any magnitude in the course of the warfare, wherein the Union forces beneath Gen. McDowell were defeated by the confederates underneath Gen. Beauregard, and fell back in disorder to Washington. On Dec. 26 he began to march thence upon Murfreesboro, the place Bragg’s forces have been concentrated; he encountered some opposition, and reached Stone river near that place on the 29th and 30th. Here bloody engagements occurred, Dec. 31, 1862, and Jan. 2, 1863, which resulted in the abandonment of Murfreesboro by the confederates in the course of the night of Jan. 3-4. (See Murfreesboro.) The other operations on this vicinity throughout the winter and spring had been confined to cavalry raids. About April 1, 1862, Gen. McClellan, who now had command only of the department of the Potomac, transferred his forces to Fortress Monroe, and began a motion upon Richmond up the peninsula between the York and James rivers.
